Unit descriptor:                This unit deals with the provision of emergency life support in recognising and responding to an emergency using basic life support measures. The first aider provides an initial response to a situation where first aid may be required but is not expected to deal with complex casualties or incidents. In this unit it is assumed the first aider is working under supervision and/or according to established workplace or community first aid procedures and policies.

1. Apply basic emergency life support first aid techniques

Situation is assessed

First aid management is provided in accordance with established first aid procedures

Casualty is reassured in a caring and calm manner and made comfortable using available resources

First aid assistance is sought from others in a timely manner and as appropriate

1.5

Vital signs of casualty(s) condition are identified and an appropriate intervention strategy is determined

1.6

Casualty management is performed according to casualty’s needs and First Aid principles

1.7

Casualty’s condition is monitored and responded to in accordance with established first aid procedures and workplace procedures

1.8

Details of casualty’s physical condition, changes in conditions, management and response to management are accurately recorded in line with organizational procedures

2. Communicate details of the incident

2.1

Appropriate emergency assistance is requested using appropriate communication media and equipment

2.2

Details of casualty's condition and management activities are accurately conveyed to emergency services/relieving personnel

2.3

Documentation is completed in a timely manner, presenting all relevant facts according to established organisational procedures
