Course Overview

The Australian Ski Patrol Association is the recognised peak body for ski patroller training in Australia.

The Advanced Emergency Care (AEC) course is specifically designed for ski patrollers. It seeks to develop strong knowledge and skills focused on the management of a wide range of possible first aid emergencies in the alpine setting. This course requires extensive hands on participation and, working on skills to manage hypothetical emergencies. Candidates will learn to use a variety of splints, techniques for spinal immobilisation, pain relief and oxygen therapy.

Candidates wishing to enrol in an ASPA 4 day course must have a current HLTAID003 Apply First Aid certificate or equivalent. Patrollers must have the approval from the Patrol Director or Patrol Manager of the resort at which they are a patrol member. Non Patrollers must make contact with the Course Director before enrolling.

Prior to attending the course, there are approximately 30 hours of pre-course work preparation:

  • Download and study the ASPA Advanced Emergency Care manual*
  • Download and view the pre-course videos and answer the pre-course question*

*these are available once you successfully enrol into the program which includes full payment

It is mandatory requirement that all pre-course work is completed 24 hours prior to attending the face-to- face course component to provide a sound understanding of the theory associated with advanced first aid. The pre-course work is a significant component of the AEC program and compliance is necessary for entry into the face-to-face course component.

Candidates are required to participate in equipment skills sessions and outdoor scenario based practical assessment. This will require floor work, working outdoors and hands on other candidates, male and female. Please wear appropriate clothing.

The course has four components:

  • Completion of pre-course work
  • Attendance for the entire duration of the course
  • Practical competencies including CPR/ AED, Conscious and unconscious casualty

# Final multiple choice exam will be completed in a classroom environment on an ipad tablet device supplied by ASPA. Please notify the Course Director on day one of the course if you have any special requirements or learning difficulties.
